Technical Lead - New Product Ventures
Love turning advanced technology into real products? Join EMRI and help shape the next generation of maritime systems.
EMRI develops advanced control and navigation systems for large commercial vessels. Our products are installed on some of the world's most demanding ships, where reliability, safety and precision are essential. EMRI's systems ensure precise navigation and thus better utilization of the ships' fuel, leading to reduction of CO2 emissions. That is something we are proud of.
As part of the Furuno Group, one of the world's leading suppliers of maritime electronics, we are investing significantly in the next generation of maritime technologies. Our ambition is to establish EMRI as Furuno's global centre of excellence for advanced control and navigation systems while expanding our portfolio of innovative products.
To support this journey, we are looking for a hands-on Technical Lead for new strategic products.
The Role
This role is for someone who enjoys turning early product ideas into real working technology.
You will join at an early stage, where the technical direction must be shaped, assumptions must be tested, and practical solutions must be built. The role requires broad technical understanding, strong engineering judgement and the ability to move effectively between concept, prototype, validation and production preparation.
Drive the technical development of new strategic products from concept to validated prototype and onward towards production.
Build, code, test and improve prototypes, including interfaces, analysis tools, data handling and validation software.
Define technical scope, system architecture, interfaces, integration principles, validation approach and production-readiness needs.
Work across software, hardware, mechanics, electronics, sensors, algorithms and test to create a complete product basis.
Use EMRI’s skilled Innovation resources for sparring, specialist input and development support where needed.
Analyse sensor performance and support decisions on feasibility, product variants, supplier fit and production suitability.
Break down the technical work and decide what to solve personally, what to involve EMRI specialists in, and what to place with suppliers or external specialists.
Specify and technically review outsourced design, development, test or production work.
Ensure that timing, data quality, real-time behaviour, interface requirements and manufacturability are properly handled.
Translate regulatory, product and customer requirements into practical technical solutions, verification activities and production input.
After prototype proof of concept, act as technical lead for the development team implementing the production version and establishing the technical basis for manufacturing, test and validation.
Prepare technical decision material for management, partners and next-phase investment or productization decisions.
You will report to the General Manager Innovation and work closely with Product Management, the Management Team, including the CEO, and engineering teams across the Furuno Group.
This role offers significant influence on technical strategy and the opportunity to shape products that may become part of Furuno's future global portfolio.
About You
You will not be expected to be a specialist in every technical discipline. EMRI has skilled Innovation resources within software, electronics, mechanics, systems engineering and maritime product development. The key is that you can create technical direction, understand the complete product challenge, use the right internal and external specialists, and personally drive important parts of the technical work forward.
Ideally, you have:
A Master’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline
Strong hands-on experience with instrument, equipment or system build-up, preferably within navigation, sensors, embedded systems, control systems or maritime electronics.
Experienced in taking technical concepts from early prototype to production-ready product.
Capable of understanding navigation sensors, motion sensor technology, heading systems and sensor fusion.
Able to write and specify code for prototypes, test tools, data analysis, interfaces and technical validation, including effective use of AI-assisted development practices.
Practical understanding of hardware, electronics, mechanics, interfaces, data flow, timing and real-time system constraints.
Familiar with sensor performance analysis, including stability, noise, drift, calibration behaviour and measurement data.
Comfortable building and specifying test setups, analysis software and validation tools.
Able to make practical design choices and judge what can be done internally, what should involve EMRI specialists, and what should be outsourced.
Practical understanding of maritime or similar high-reliability interfaces, installation conditions, validation needs and production constraints.
Hands-on “player-coach” profile: able to effectively produce substantial technical work personally and later guide others as the team expands and products mature.
Excellent communication skills and fluent English
Experience from the maritime industry is highly desirable and will be considered a significant advantage. Experience from other industries developing high-reliability products—such as industrial automation, aerospace, defence or robotics—is also highly relevant.

Why join EMRI?
This is an opportunity to join a company undergoing significant transformation.
You will work at the intersection of technology, strategy and business, helping shape future products that will be deployed worldwide. You will collaborate directly with senior management and international stakeholders while influencing major investment decisions within a global technology group.
If you enjoy creating new opportunities rather than maintaining the status quo, we would like to hear from you.
