Are you a great people manager with experience developing combined software and hardware products. Then come join our growth journey and make a real difference.
We are on a mission!
EMRI has just received approval from our mother company Furuno for a four-year investment plan. It will require us to almost double the number of employees and build a completely new maritime product portfolio designed for autonomous ships.
There is a catch, though. Take a look at our website www.emri.dk. It looks like it was developed in the 1990’s. Or drive past our current offices at Marielundvej 37 in Herlev. It is literally ready to be demolished (I kid you not – it will be torn down in a couple of years to make room for a new housing area).
That shows the other side of the coin. We will need to completely reinvent the company and everything we do.
It is an opportunity of a lifetime to really make a difference. Both in shaping a new organization, but also in participating in creating some exciting new products that will literally steer the maritime industry and contribute to reducing the energy consumption in maritime transportation.
This job will challenge you in many ways. This is not an easy job!
You will be flexing your people management skills from day one. We need you to change the culture of the department from a culture driven by sales projects to a culture driven by structured product development. At the same time, you will need to marry three groups of people. The old wizards who are the guardians of our domain knowledge and the old products. The young group (5-10 years with EMRI) who knows the industry and are involved in a lot of practical projects and who have a multitude of ideas for new products. And finally, the new-comers who have joined recently or will be joining over the next couple of years, and who bring up-to-date knowledge about professional best-practice and the latest theory and methods.
It will be one of your main tasks to turn this into a dream team.
Our intention is to expand our current development team of eight people today to at least 15-20 people. It will be another key task for you to make sure that we attract the right talent and recruit and onboard the new people.
Ways of working
Our current development approach could probably benefit from a bit of modernization – to put it mildly. But we are ambitious and we want you to roll out your toolkit and help change our development group into a fully agile and lean team. Both for software and hardware.
You should not be too religious about how we implement it in practice. At the end of the day, you need to be able to tell the rest of the organization how the roadmap looks like, make sure that we focus first on the issues which create the most value, either in reducing risk, getting closer to the customer needs, or in ensuring that the technology architecture can support the monuments that we will build next.
We hope that you share our view that this approach is both motivating for our people and creates the most value in the long term.
We want to be proud of both what we do and how we do it.
Roadmaps and plans
Looking into a multi-year product develop flow, you will need to develop product and technology roadmaps in collaboration with stakeholders in product management and the rest of the organization – including our Japanese mother company Furuno. Of course, aligned with our company strategy and product ambitions.
Tools, processes and infrastructure
As we mature into a product organization, we are also implementing new tools and processes. We are in the middle of the implementation of a Product Lifecycle Management tool based on HighStage. We are also implementing Altium Designer for electronics design, SE Electric for installation documentation and finally linking all of this to our Microsoft Business Central ERP system. You will need to take an active role in all of this. You will be assisted both by some of the people who are already involved and by our Quality department, where we are hiring a new process consultant.
You will be a member of our management group and will report to COO Morten Novak Bro.
You hold a master’s degree or a PhD in a technical field.
You probably have a software background which you have complemented during your career with experience in hardware development. Software, because that will have given you a solid introduction to agile development. But this is not a requirement, if you have picked up agile development experience in other ways.
You are an excellent people manager and a good communicator. As a manager you set a clear direction for your team, while allowing individuals the freedom to execute within the overall framework.
You should have experience with agile development and general project management.
It is plus if you have experience with:
- Product Lifecycle Management
- Any of the tools that we mentioned above
You should be fluent in English – both written and verbally. Preferably also in Danish. We welcome candidates from abroad, but you need to have an EU work permit.
We work from home on a regular basis. Just more productive to be flexible - both for the job and the family.
If you have questions or want to know more about the position, please contact COO, Morten Novak Bro on +45 2964 7727.
If this job sounds appealing to you, please send your resume and cover letter already today – we will conduct interviews on an ongoing basis.
EMRI has been developing intelligent steering systems for deep sea ships for 50 years. Our systems control everything from the largest cruise liners to the most exclusive mega-yachts. In 2020 we were bought by the Japanese company Furuno who has designated us as their global competence center for maritime steering systems. We are a Danish company head quartered in the Copenhagen area. We also have a small R&D office in Aalborg.
